Use classroom groups in an assignment
Link classroom groups when an assignment should use reusable membership from Classes. The link stays live, so later membership changes in Classes also change the project teams.
Open the classroom-group picker
Section titled “Open the classroom-group picker”- Open a Draft or Upcoming assignment.
- Select Teams.
- Set Who to everyone in the class or the selected students who should receive the project.
- Keep Students work set to In teams.
- Choose Use your classroom groups.
Rectangle opens the reusable groups for this class. Groups appear under their set names, with standalone groups in their own section. If the class has no sets, the groups appear as one flat list.
Select groups or a whole set
Section titled “Select groups or a whole set”- Select a group card to add or remove that individual group from the selection.
- Use the set header action to select every group in that set at once.
- When a full set is selected, use the same header action to deselect it.
The set is a selection shortcut. The assignment links the individual classroom groups inside it.
Resolve placement blockers
Section titled “Resolve placement blockers”Rectangle checks the students included under Who against the groups you selected:
- Left out: an included student is not in any selected group.
- Doubled: an included student is in two or more selected groups.
- Added beyond your selection: a selected group contains someone outside Who. That student will be included in the project too.
Add selected groups becomes available only when every included student is on exactly one selected group. Select different groups until the left-out and doubled messages are clear. If the classroom groups do not fit this project, cancel the picker and make project teams instead.
Confirm the live link
Section titled “Confirm the live link”After you add the groups, the Teams view shows a Live link message and identifies each team as a classroom group synced with Classes. The placement summary continues to show whether every included student is on one team exactly once.
Use the available actions to:
- Change groups and reopen the picker with the current groups selected;
- Unlink groups and remove them from this assignment without deleting the classroom groups;
- Manage in Classes and open the class’s group area in a new tab.
Change linked membership later
Section titled “Change linked membership later”An active assignment no longer has the prelaunch Teams tab. Change the reusable membership in Classes instead. Before a Classes-side edit affects an active project, Rectangle names the project and explains the consequence.
Deleting a linked group can detach that team from an active project. Submitted work tied to the group blocks deletion so the record remains available.
Switch the assignment to individual work
Section titled “Switch the assignment to individual work”Opening the Individually view does not detach the classroom groups. Select Set as individual work to commit the change. Rectangle confirms the consequence, then unlinks the groups from the assignment. The reusable classroom groups remain in Classes.
