Create, edit, archive, or delete a class

Classes is the starting point for creating a class and managing its basic details over time. A class needs only a name; subject, grade level, and period are optional.

Open Classes from the main navigation. Class-level work starts from this list. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Select Classes in the main navigation.
  2. Select Create a class.
  3. Enter a Class name.
  4. Add a subject, grade level, or period if those details will help you recognize the class later.
  5. Select Create class.
Class name is required. Subject, grade level, and period are optional. Select the image to enlarge it.

The dialog closes and the Classes list refreshes. Select the new class row to open its class home. If you try to create a class without a name, Rectangle keeps the dialog open and asks you to add one.

Class name is the only required field. Rectangle keeps the dialog open when it is missing. Select the image to enlarge it.

If the class already exists in a connected roster system, start with Import rosters instead. That preserves the class’s roster source and gives you its available sync controls.

Owners and co-teachers can edit class details.

Use a class row's action menu to edit details or archive the class. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Open the class actions menu from the Classes list, or open the class and use its actions menu.
  2. Select Edit details.
  3. Change the class name, subject, grade level, period, or class color.
  4. Select Save changes.
Edit details is where owners and co-teachers can change class identity fields and choose or reset the class color. Select the image to enlarge it.

Class color is available when editing, not during initial creation. Select Use subject color if you want Rectangle to choose the color from the class subject again.

Assistants can open a class but cannot edit its details. Only the class owner can archive, unarchive, or delete it.

Archive a class when the term or course has ended but its history should remain available.

  1. Open the class actions menu from the Classes list or class home. You can also open the class’s Settings tab.
  2. Select Archive.

Archive happens immediately, so use it only after checking that you selected the intended class.

An archived class disappears from the active portion of the Classes list. Expand Archived to find and open it later. If you archive while inside the class, Rectangle leaves you there and shows that the class is archived.

Archiving is not a universal read-only lock. It turns off roster changes, join-code controls, class settings, and teaching-team changes. Class details can still be edited by the owner or a co-teacher, and the Groups tab keeps its currently available management controls.

  1. Select Classes in the main navigation.
  2. Expand Archived.
  3. Open the class actions menu and select Unarchive. The owner can also unarchive from the class home or its Settings tab.

The class returns to the active list and its class-management controls become available again.

Class-specific behavior and the archive action live in Settings. Select the image to enlarge it.

Only the class owner can delete a class. Open the class, use its actions menu, and select Delete this class. Rectangle names the class and explains the permanent consequence before you confirm.

The class-home action menu separates reversible archive from permanent deletion. Select the image to enlarge it.
Rectangle names the class, explains the permanent consequence, and offers archive as the safer alternative before deletion. Select the image to enlarge it.

Deletion cannot be undone and removes the class’s roster, groups, and assignment connections. Use archive instead whenever the class or its history may be needed again. If deletion fails, Rectangle keeps the class open and shows an error so you can try again without losing your place.
