Manage class groups and group sets

Manage saved groups from the class’s Groups section. Changes made here update the reusable classroom records, including any live assignment links that use them.

A class can keep multiple reusable group sets and standalone groups at the same time; students may appear in more than one grouping. Select the image to enlarge it.

Open the group action menu to:

  • Rename the group;
  • Change color using a Rectangle color preset;
  • Move to set and choose an existing set;
  • choose New set from the Move flow to create a set and move the group;
  • Remove from set so the group becomes standalone;
  • Duplicate the group;
  • Delete the group.

Moving a group between sets changes only its shelf. Membership stays the same. Because membership may overlap across sets, check the placement message when you later select classroom groups for an assignment.

Duplicating a group copies its color, shelf, and active members. Withdrawn members are not added to the duplicate.

To change membership in a group set, select Edit set and use the full builder. To change membership in a standalone group, select its group card to open the inline editor.

Edit set opens the full membership builder. Drag students, use each group's Add control, or randomize, then save the complete draft once. Select the image to enlarge it.

Use the set header and action menu to:

  • Edit set in the group builder;
  • Duplicate set with its groups and active membership;
  • Rename set;
  • Ungroup so the set goes away and its groups become standalone;
  • Delete set and choose whether its groups should remain.

Ungrouping preserves group names, membership, and work. It removes only the set that organized them.

A set header can show that one or more of its groups are being used by a current assignment. When you edit a set linked to an active project, Rectangle names the project and explains that saving will reshape those project teams.

That is a live link, not a copy. The same classroom-group membership is used in Classes and in every assignment linked to it.

When you choose Delete set, the safer default is Keep the groups. Rectangle deletes the set and makes its groups standalone.

Choose Delete the groups too only when the groups themselves should go away. Rectangle blocks that choice while a group is linked to an active project. It also blocks deletion when submitted student work depends on a group.

If a group is linked to an active project, the confirmation names that project and explains that deletion will detach the team there. If submitted work is tied to the group, deletion is blocked.

Keep the group when Rectangle says the record must stay. You can remove it from its set and leave it standalone without losing the membership or student-work history.

A withdrawn student remains visible in the original group as no longer on the roster and does not count toward the active member total. Duplicating a group or set includes active students only, so a withdrawn membership is not carried into the new copy.

Class owners and co-teachers can use these actions. Assistants can view the group structure but do not see the management verbs.
