Add students to a class

Add students from the Roster section of a class. You can enter one student, paste a list, or upload a CSV without leaving the class.

Open a class from the Classes list. Roster is the first of the four class sections. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Select Classes in the main navigation.
  2. Open the class.
  3. Stay on Roster.
  4. Select Add students.
All three manual roster-entry methods are available from the same Add students panel. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Select One at a time.
  2. Enter the student’s name.
  3. Enter an email address when the student has one. Email is optional.
  4. Select Add 1 student.

This method does not ask for a grade. You can add a student without email and give them a printed sign-in card afterward.

Use this method when you have names copied from another document.

  1. Select Paste a list.
  2. Put one student on each line.
  3. Use either of these formats:
    • Student name
    • Student name, student@example.com
  4. Review the accepted, duplicate, and rejected lines.
  5. Fix every rejected line, then add the students.
Rectangle validates the entire pasted list before adding anyone. Duplicates are skipped; invalid rows block the import until corrected. Select the image to enlarge it.

Paste mode accepts a name and an optional email only. It does not accept a grade. If a student’s name contains a comma, use the CSV method instead.

Use Rectangle’s template when you are preparing a larger roster.

  1. Select Upload a CSV.
  2. Select Download template, or prepare a CSV with this exact header: name, email, grade.
  3. Add up to 200 student rows. Name is required; email and grade can be blank.
  4. Enter grades as 0 through 12. Use 0 for kindergarten, not K.
  5. Drag the file into the upload area or choose it from your device.
  6. Review the preview. Fix every rejected line, then upload the file again.
  7. Add the accepted students.

Rectangle explains rejected rows by line so you can repair the source file. A malformed header, an extra column, an unsupported grade, or an unsafe spreadsheet value can prevent the list from being submitted.

Rectangle does not create a second enrollment for someone already active or waiting for approval in the class. Adding a former student again reactivates their existing enrollment, with their earlier work and grades still attached.

Existing Rectangle accounts do not receive a new sign-in link when you add them. Those students continue using their existing Rectangle sign-in. A new email-backed account has a link ready for you to send from the result or roster.

After the add finishes, Rectangle summarizes what happened and offers the access actions that apply:

  • Select Send new links for eligible new students with email addresses.
  • Select Print sign-in cards for students who need a physical link and QR code.
  • Add more students or close the panel when you are finished.

Students without email use printed cards. Existing Rectangle students use the account access they already have. See Help students access Rectangle before printing: printing a card replaces any earlier sign-in link for that student.
