Sync a Google Classroom roster

Sync a class imported from Google Classroom when its membership has changed. Sync is manual: Rectangle checks Google only when an owner or co-teacher selects Sync now.

  1. Select Classes and open the imported class.
  2. Stay on Roster.
  3. Select Sync now in the roster tools, or open Roster source and select Sync now there.
  4. Wait for Rectangle to confirm that the sync finished.
  5. Review the active roster, Former students, and student access notes for changes.
Open Roster source from an imported class to confirm its Google course, backing account, and last sync before syncing or opening Integrations. Select the image to enlarge it.

A class that has not synced recently can also show Sync now on the Classes list.

The current sync confirmation is a general success or failure message. It does not show an itemized count of additions, changes, conflicts, or removals. Review the refreshed roster to see the result.

For students who came from the Google Classroom roster, sync can:

  • Add a newly rostered student.
  • Update a student’s name or email.
  • Reactivate a returning student.
  • Move a student who left the Google roster to Former students.
  • Leave a student unchanged when both rosters already agree.

Moving a student to Former students preserves their submissions, grades, and class history. If that student returns to the Google roster, a later sync reactivates the same enrollment.

Sync does not remove or rewrite students you added manually or approved through a class join code.

Pending requests stay above the roster, active placeholder matches remain searchable in the main card, and removed enrollments remain recoverable under Former students. Select the image to enlarge it.

After the sync, look for Hasn’t signed in yet, Sign-in link expired, or No email on the refreshed roster.

  • Use Send new links for eligible email-backed students.
  • Use Print sign-in cards for students who need a card.
  • An existing Rectangle account continues using its current sign-in and does not receive a new link merely because the sync added it to this class.

Printing a card replaces any earlier sign-in link for that student. Only the newest card or link will work.

  • If Rectangle says a sync is already in progress, wait five minutes and try again.
  • If the Google connection needs attention, open Roster source, choose Manage in Settings, and reconnect under Integrations.
  • If you have tried repeatedly in a short period, wait before trying again.
  • If a student you removed in Rectangle returns after sync, remove them from the Google Classroom source roster before syncing again.

Assistants cannot run a sync. Archived classes remain readable but cannot sync until the owner unarchives them.
