Create or edit a standalone group

Create a standalone group when you need one reusable classroom group without a larger set. A standalone group may include any active students, including students who already belong to other groups.

Open the class, then select Groups. New set and New group begin the two reusable-group workflows. Select the image to enlarge it.

Saved standalone groups appear below the named group-set shelves under Standalone groups.

A class can keep multiple reusable group sets and standalone groups at the same time; students may appear in more than one grouping. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Open Classes and select the class.
  2. Select Groups.
  3. Select New group.
  4. Enter a group name. The name is the only required field, so you can add membership now or later.
  5. Select Add students.
  6. Search the active roster or browse the list.
  7. Select the students to add, then confirm the selection.
  8. Select Save group.
Choose any active students for a standalone group. Membership in other groups does not make a student unavailable. Select the image to enlarge it.

The picker may show another group or set beside a student’s name. That information helps you see existing membership; it does not make the student unavailable. Classroom groups do not compete for students.

Select a standalone group card to reopen its inline editor. From there you can:

  • change the group name;
  • add more active students;
  • remove current members;
  • save the updated membership.

A failed save leaves the editor open so you can try again.

Open the group action menu and choose Move to set. Select an existing set, or choose New set to create a set and move the group into it.

Moving a group changes only where it is organized. Its name, color, and membership stay intact. Choose Remove from set later if you want the group to become standalone again.

A withdrawn member remains visible as no longer on the roster until you remove that membership. The student is not offered for new placement, but the saved relationship remains available for earlier team history.

When you use a standalone group in an assignment, Assign still checks the project’s included students. Every included student must be on exactly one selected team, and group members outside the Who selection will also be included in the project.
