Build and adjust group membership

Use the group builder to place active students, change group names, and adjust how many groups belong in a set. The same controls appear when you create a set and when you edit one later.

Open the class, select Groups, find the set you want, and select Edit set.

A class can keep multiple reusable group sets and standalone groups at the same time; students may appear in more than one grouping. Select the image to enlarge it.
  • Unplaced contains active students who are not in a group in this set.
  • Each group card shows an editable name, member count, members, an Add control, and a group action menu.
  • The bar above the groups shows how many active students are in a group. It does not require every student to be placed.
  • Not saved yet appears after you make membership changes that have not been committed.
Edit set opens the full membership builder. Drag students, use each group's Add control, or randomize, then save the complete draft once. Select the image to enlarge it.

Rectangle supplies distinct automatic group names as a starting point. Keep them or type names that fit the class. If a name is left blank, Rectangle supplies a numbered fallback when the group is saved.

Drag a student from Unplaced onto a group. To move a student between groups, drag the student onto the destination group. Drag a student back to Unplaced to remove the student from this set.

Dropping outside a group or the Unplaced tray leaves the student where they were.

  1. Open Add on the destination group.
  2. Choose a student from the Unplaced list.
  3. To move someone to a different group, first use the remove control on the student chip. This returns the student to Unplaced.
  4. Open Add on the new group and choose the student.

Within one builder session, a student can be in only one of that set’s groups at a time. The same student may still belong to groups in other sets.

  • Select Add team in the builder bar or use the Add a team card to create another empty group.
  • Type directly in a group name to rename it.
  • Open the group action menu and choose Remove team to remove that group from the draft. Its active members return to Unplaced.

Only nonempty new groups are created when you save. If you empty an existing saved group and save the edit, Rectangle removes that group. Submitted work tied to the group can block the removal; keep the group when Rectangle says its record must remain.

  1. Select Randomize.
  2. Choose Team size or Number of teams.
  3. Enter the size or count you want.
  4. Review the preview, then form the teams.

Randomize replaces all groups in the current draft and redistributes every active student available to this builder. Withdrawn students are not placed again. You can drag-adjust the result before saving.

Select Save teams after at least one student has been placed. Students may remain in Unplaced; they simply do not belong to this set.

This differs from an assignment’s Teams section. A classroom set can be partial, but a team-based assignment must put every student included under Who on exactly one team before launch.

Switching between sections of the same class preserves the open builder draft. Select Cancel when you intend to discard it.
