Make project teams for one assignment

Make project teams when one assignment needs a grouping that should not stay linked to reusable classroom groups. These teams belong to this assignment only.

Who and Students work sit together at the top of Teams. Open Selected students to change the assignment audience before choosing a team source. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Open a Draft or Upcoming assignment.
  2. Select Teams.
  3. Set Who to everyone or the selected students who should receive the project.
  4. Keep Students work set to In teams.
  5. Choose Make teams for this project.

The builder opens with automatic team names and the included students in Unplaced. Keep the names or replace them.

Project teams use only the students included under Who. A partial draft can be saved, but every included student must be placed exactly once before launch. Select the image to enlarge it.
  • Drag students from Unplaced onto a team or between teams.
  • Use a team’s Add control to place a student without dragging.
  • Use the remove control on a student chip to return the student to Unplaced.
  • Select Add team or Add a team to create another empty team.
  • Open a team’s action menu and choose Remove team to remove it from the draft.

For a fresh mechanical distribution, select Randomize, then choose Team size or Number of teams. Randomize replaces the teams currently in the draft and distributes every student included under Who. You can adjust the result before saving.

Select Save teams after at least one student has been placed. Rectangle creates and attaches only the nonempty teams.

Saving a partial arrangement is useful while a roster is still settling, but it does not make the assignment ready for team-based launch. Before launch, every student included under Who must be on exactly one team.

The builder draft survives a switch to another assignment tab. Cancel explicitly discards it. A save failure leaves the builder open for retry.

After saving, use Edit teams to reopen the builder with the current teams. Rename teams, change membership, add teams, or remove teams, then save the revised arrangement.

Use Remove teams when this assignment should no longer use them. Rectangle deletes these assignment-only teams before detaching them. This is different from Unlink groups, which removes a live classroom-group link without deleting the reusable groups in Classes.

Select Save as a set when this project arrangement should also become reusable in the class. Rectangle:

  1. creates a new set in Classes using the assignment title;
  2. copies each project team into that set as a reusable classroom group;
  3. leaves the assignment’s original project teams unchanged and attached.

The result is a copy, not a conversion. If only some team copies succeed, Rectangle reports how many were saved and does not silently claim that the full set was created. Use Manage in Classes to open the new set.

Opening Individually does not immediately delete the project teams. Select Set as individual work to commit the change. Rectangle asks for confirmation before removing saved project teams and warns before discarding any unsaved placements.
