Understand and search a class roster

The Roster section is the people view for a class. Use it to find current students, review requests to join, see who needs sign-in help, and reach former students whose class history is preserved.

  1. Select Classes in the main navigation.
  2. Open the class you want.
  3. Select Roster if another class section is open.

The roster keeps different kinds of membership separate:

  • Requests waiting for a decision appear above the current roster.
  • Active students appear in the main list.
  • Students removed from the active roster appear under Former students.

Within each area, names are arranged alphabetically.

Pending requests stay above the roster, active placeholder matches remain searchable in the main card, and removed enrollments remain recoverable under Former students. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Select the Find a student… box above the active roster.
  2. Enter all or part of the student’s name.
  3. Clear the search when you want to see the full active roster again.
Find filters the active roster as you type. Select the student's name or use Open student page from the row menu. Select the image to enlarge it.

Find filters active students. It does not search or hide the Former students area. Open that area separately when you are looking for someone who is no longer active in the class.

Select the student’s name, or open the row menu and choose Open student page. The student page keeps the fuller class history out of the roster so the roster can stay easy to scan.

Former students remain linked to their records. Removing someone from the active roster does not erase their submissions, grades, or class history.

A roster row can show the student’s email, how the student entered the class, and an access note such as Hasn’t signed in yet, Sign-in link expired, No email, or Signs in with a card.

Use those notes to choose the right next task:

  • Use Help students access Rectangle to send links or print cards.
  • Use Review student join requests for students waiting above the roster.
  • Use Remove or reactivate a student to change active membership without deleting history.
  • Open Roster source when the class came from Google Classroom and you need connection or sync details.

Class owners and co-teachers can change the roster. Assistants can read the roster but do not receive roster-changing controls. An archived class is also read-only until its owner unarchives it.
