Help students sign in

The roster shows which students still need help getting into Rectangle. Email-backed students can receive a new sign-in link; students without email can use a printed card with a URL and QR code.

Open a class from the Classes list. Roster is the first of the four class sections. Select the image to enlarge it.

The same roster keeps pending requests, active access states, and former students distinct. Use the access chip and adjacent action on the student’s active row; do not treat a pending or former row as an active sign-in problem.

Pending requests stay above the roster, active placeholder matches remain searchable in the main card, and removed enrollments remain recoverable under Former students. Select the image to enlarge it.
  1. Select Classes and open the class.
  2. Stay on Roster.
  3. Look for the access summary above the student list and the note on each student row.

The notes mean:

  • Hasn’t signed in yet: the student has an unused sign-in link.
  • Sign-in link expired: create and send a fresh link.
  • No email: print a sign-in card for this student.
  • Signs in with a card: Rectangle has created a card credential for the student.

Rectangle may leave the access area quiet when no roster action applies. A missing note is not a promise about which sign-in method the student currently uses.

  1. Open the student’s row menu.
  2. Select Send new link.
  3. Wait for Rectangle to confirm that it was sent.

This action appears for an active, email-backed student who has not activated their account. Creating a new link replaces the student’s earlier link, so tell the student to use the newest email.

When several eligible students have not signed in, select Send new links in the roster access summary. Rectangle sends only to the eligible email-backed students in that group. Students without email are not included; print cards for them instead.

Existing Rectangle accounts do not get a new link just because you add them to a class. They continue using their existing Rectangle sign-in. The roster offers Send new link only when that recovery action applies.

  1. For one student, open the row menu and select Print card.
  2. For everyone eligible, select Print sign-in cards above the roster.
  3. Complete the browser’s print dialog.
  4. Give each student only their own card.

Cards are arranged for printing and include the student’s name, class, sign-in address, and QR code. Treat a card like a password: do not post it publicly or hand it to another student.

Printing a card replaces every earlier sign-in link for that student. This includes a link Rectangle already emailed. After a card is printed, only the newest printed card or a link created later will work.

Rectangle keeps one current sign-in credential for this access path. Choose the email or card the student will actually use; creating another one replaces it.

Let students request the class with a join code

Section titled “Let students request the class with a join code”

A join code helps a student request membership; it is not a substitute for the student’s Rectangle sign-in. A student who is not signed in is first taken through account signup, then returned to the class request.

Create the code in the Roster section and share the code or link. After a student uses it, Rectangle shows the teacher a pending request. The student does not enter the class until an owner or co-teacher approves that request.

Open New code from the class Roster to create an open or limited join code. Select the image to enlarge it.

If Rectangle says the code is invalid, inactive, expired, or out of uses, create a new code and share the replacement.

  • Make sure the student is using the newest credential. Sending a link or printing a card replaces the one before it.
  • For an emailed, never-activated student, use Send new link.
  • For a no-email student, print a new card.
  • For an existing Rectangle account, have the student use their existing sign-in rather than expecting a new link from class enrollment.
  • For a join-code problem, share a currently active code and remember to approve the resulting request.
