Import classes from Google Classroom
Import existing Google Classroom courses to create Rectangle classes and bring their students and eligible co-teachers with them.
Confirm production availability first. Google Classroom roster import depends on Rectangle’s production Google authorization. Confirm that it is available for your school before planning a live import. If Google Classroom cannot connect, contact Rectangle support. Microsoft Education is marked Coming Soon and cannot import rosters today.
Start the import
Section titled “Start the import”- Select Classes in the main navigation.
- Select Import rosters. The same action appears in the empty Classes view.
- Choose Google Classroom.
- Connect the Google account that has access to the courses you teach, or continue with the connected account shown.
If Rectangle asks you to reconnect or grant missing permission, complete that Google flow and return to the import. Rectangle asks only for the access needed for the roster workflow.
Review and accept the privacy consent
Section titled “Review and accept the privacy consent”Before Rectangle reads student roster data:
- Read what Rectangle imports and how it is used.
- Complete all four required acknowledgments.
- Select Accept & Continue.
Your school authorization may also need to be confirmed again for a new school year. Rectangle will return you to consent when the required authorization is not current.
The roster import uses student name, email, Google Classroom profile identifier, and enrollment status. It does not import student photos, home addresses, birth dates, family contact details, health or accommodation information, or discipline records.
Select courses and grades
Section titled “Select courses and grades”- Review the courses Rectangle found. Available courses may already be selected.
- Clear any course you do not want to import.
- Choose a grade for every selected course. Rectangle can suggest one, but Google Classroom does not provide a dependable grade-level field.
- Select Import Selected.
You can import up to 50 courses in one run. A course already imported into Rectangle is unavailable for selection. Rectangle also identifies a course imported by another teacher so the school does not accidentally create a second copy.
Each course is handled separately. If one course fails, the successful courses remain imported and the completion page names the failure.
How students and co-teachers are matched
Section titled “How students and co-teachers are matched”Rectangle first looks for an existing student account with the same email, then checks the student’s Google Classroom identity before creating a new account. This protects against duplicate students.
Existing Rectangle accounts do not receive a new sign-in link during import. Those students continue using their existing Rectangle sign-in.
A new email-backed account has a sign-in link ready on the completion page, but Rectangle does not email it automatically. Students without an email address are skipped and listed so you can add them manually through the class roster.
A Google Classroom co-teacher is added only when their email already belongs to a Rectangle teacher or administrator. The completion page lists other co-teachers, but it does not invite them or create accounts for them.
Review the completion page
Section titled “Review the completion page”- Expand each course to review the result.
- Check any failed courses and students skipped because they had no email.
- Review the optional suggestion to add subjects or grades to your teaching profile.
- Select Copy instructions or Present when you want to explain the sign-in process in class.
- For newly created accounts, select Reveal all links only when necessary or select Download CSV.
- Select Send magic link emails when you want Rectangle to email the available new-account links.
- Select Copy to clipboard when you want the ready-to-share class announcement.
- Select Go to My Classrooms, or choose Import more courses for another batch.
The downloaded CSV contains working sign-in credentials. Store and share it like a password file. Do not post it in a shared folder or include its links in a public screenshot.
If you later print a sign-in card from a class roster, the printed card replaces that student’s earlier emailed or downloaded link. Only the newest card or link will work.
If the import does not finish
Section titled “If the import does not finish”- Use the wizard’s retry action when the course list fails to load.
- Reconnect Google Classroom when Rectangle says the connection expired or needs additional permission.
- Return to the consent step when school authorization or roster consent is missing.
- On a partial import, keep the successful classes and retry only the courses that failed.
- Add skipped no-email students manually after opening the imported class.
Do not disconnect and reimport merely to repair one failed course. Disconnecting is an account-level choice and is not an import retry step.
